Under the general direction of the Assistant Director of Social Enterprises, the Social Enterprises Assistant will support the daily operations of multiple part-time and seasonal social enterprise sites, including a cafe, a mobile ice cream stand and an ice cream kiosk. This role involves working directly alongside youth program participants and other team members to ensure high quality customer service and efficient service delivery. The Social Enterprises Assistant will be responsible for preparing beverages and food items, maintaining clean and organized workspaces, and assisting with basic inventory tracking. They will communicate directly with customers while on the floor, collaborate with fellow team members as needed, and report to the Assistant Director of Social Enterprises. While not a direct supervisor, the Assistant will serve as a consistent adult presence on the floor, modeling professionalism and contributing to a positive workspace culture. This is a hands-on, customer-facing role that requires flexibility, reliability, especially for morning shifts, and a willingness to adapt to various service environments.
The position works within The Choice Program which provides mentoring and advocacy services to young people throughout the state of Maryland. The Choice Program utilizes an anti-racist, community-based, family-centered approach to promote high quality outcomes for young people and families. The Choice Program engages in a collaborative process of service where young people set goals for themselves and are held accountable by supportive adults along the way. The program’s approach to youth development is grounded in applied critical race theory and culturally responsive, trauma-informed practices. Schedule
The Social Enterprises Assistant is expected to work a minimum of 20 hours per week from Sunday through Saturday, which includes a 30-minute paid lunch break. Please note that while this is the expected schedule, there may be adjustments to hours and/or days depending on the needs of the social enterprise. Any significant changes will be communicated in advance to accommodate your planning.
Pay
The Social Enterprises Assistant will be paid $20/hour. Please note that this is a Contingent I contract with no paid leave and no benefits.
Telework
The Choice Program operates three social enterprises in Baltimore City; a kiosk at the Inner Harbor, a stand at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, and a cafe at the University of Baltimore. The Social Enterprises Assistant will be expected to work predominantly onsite at the social enterprise locations.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and serve coffee, tea, and other beverages in a café setting
- Scoop and serve ice cream at waterfront kiosk and distribute pre-scooped cups at mobile stand locations
- Maintain a clean, organized and sanitary workstation, ensuring compliance with health and safety standard
- Support basic inventory tracking by monitoring stock levels and communicating restocking needs to direct supervisor
- Deliver excellent customer service by fostering a welcoming, inclusive and professional environment for all patrons
- Work collaboratively across multiple service locations, including cafe, kiosk and mobile stand, with flexibility and adaptability
- Serve as a reliable, punctual team member, especially during early morning shifts, helping maintain operational consistency
- Model professional behavior and provide informal, on-the-floor guidance to youth participants without serving in a direct supervisory capacity
Required Minimum Requirements
- At least 1 year experience in food service or customer service facing roles
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Ability to work in fast paced, team oriented, and youth centered environment
- Basic knowledge of inventory management
- Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle where you are on the insurance
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working or volunteering for an organization, institution or company with, or personally having, a strong commitment to anti-racist practices, equity and inclusion
- Fluency in Spanish
